Amongst friends and neighbours
(An open door to Maghreb)

It's said that neighbours are bound to ignore one another. That may well be the case. But we'd rather put an end to our ignorance of the strength, vitality and variety of the powerful Maghribian cinematographies. The work of inquisitive moviemakers, men and women from Morocco, Algiers and Tunisia, has for some time now been regular news at international festivals, garnering awards and making itself known in European countries, bringing the awareness of a culture, overshadowed whiles by the ease of common ground. To discover Maghribian cinema is to open ourselves to their way of thinking and to accept seeing ourselves from a different angle.

This season proposes assorted landmarks of these cinematographies, titles which, together with the analysis of legendary myths, take a new look at the wars of occupation, their experiences with the colonists, the situation of women, political corruption, the yearning for emigration and its subsequent reality... This is a selection of the wealthy creations of intelligent filmmakers, bravely committed to their times, the interest of which will surprise those who haven't had the opportunity to discover them until now. An open door, therefore, to these Maghribian neighbours and friends, who can tell us so much about their past, their present and our imminent future.

THEMATIC RETROSPECTIVE

Under more generic, allegorically-entitled headings, the Festival has grouped together films not commonly offered (even in specialised sections) and which, nevertheless, deserve filmgoersí attention. Based on this philosophy, a number of cycles have seen the light, including "The Guys in the Photo", "Forgotten Films"; "You Only Live Once", "The Best 100 Years in our Lives", "The European Adventure", "Spanish Cinema Discoveries", "The Red Nightmare", "A Long Absence", the two editions dedicated to post-war Italian comedy, entitled "Hunger, Humour and Fantasy" and "The Boom Italian-Style", or "The TV Generation", "It Happened yesterday", "50 from the 50s", last of these cycles.
