EMIGRANTS RETROSPECTIVE

Although migration is a burning contemporary issue, it is nothing new. While today’s migratory movements consist of the flow from Africa to Europe, from Central Europe towards the South, or the perseverant attempts of the “wet backs” to cross the river distancing them from misery, in other times it the Spanish who headed for America or Europe, the Japanese for Brazil, Italians for the USA, Swedes for Denmark, Andalusian people to Catalonia, Napolitans to the industrial north...

Cinema, chronicler of its time, has portrayed the desire of so many citizens to improve their lives by changing horizons in search of better opportunities, narrating the circumstances surrounding their respective adventures.

This highly enriching question has captured the interest of important directors including Bernardo Bertolucci, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Louis Malle, Luchino Visconti, Elia Kazan, Jerzy Skolimovski, Goran Paskaljevic, Jean Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Robert M. Young, Michael Winterbottom or Jan Troell, not to mention less known but equally exciting authors. Spanish cinema has similarly focussed on migration on numerous occasions, two of which garnered the Golden Shell: Las cartas de Alou (Letters from Alou), by Montxo Armendáriz, and Bwana by Imanol Uribe.

The Emigrants retrospective will take the shape of approximately 30 movies from a wide range of genres and styles, offering a mixture of comedies and social dramas, classic films and others newly minted, many of which have either been forgotten or are unknown. An excellent selection of films demonstrating the cinematographic verve of their authors. And of an all-encompassing reality.

The Emigrants retrospective will comprise the following titles:
