The HORIZONTES JURY at the 55th San Sebastian International Film Festival, made up of the members:

Wishes to underline the importance of the Films in Progress project given its contribution to the development of a varied and daring Latin American filmography reflected in the Horizontes Latinos section.

And grants the HORIZONTES Award, carrying €35,000 (€10,000 for the director of the winning film and €25,000 for its importer in Spain), to the film:

El baño del Papa, directed by Enrique Fernández and César Charlone (Uruguay) and distributed in Spain by Golem Distribución.

It has also decided to grant a special mention to Párpados azules, directed by Ernesto Contreras, for its original manner of demonstrating the loneliness of people, transmitting it to us with exquisite tenderness. It has also decided to grant a special mention to Satanás, directed by Andrés Baiz, for the excellent performance of Marcela Mar in the part of Paola.

The Donostia-San Sebastián International Film Festival has created a new award named “Horizontes”, aimed at increasing knowledge of feature films produced totally or partially in Latin America, directed by filmmakers of Latin origin, set around or dealing with Latin communities in the rest of the world.
Eligible for this award are all of the feature films selected to form part of the “Horizontes” selection which have neither been previously presented at other Spanish Festivals nor commercially released in Spain.

This award carries a cash prize of Euros 35,000.

 

 KARL BAUMGARTNER

Karl Baumgartner was born in 1949 in Brunico (Southern Tirol, Italy). From 1967 to 1970 he worked in Rome as an assistant director and, occasionally, as a film critic. In 1971 he moved to Frankfurt and joined the collective managing Harmonie, one of the best arthouse theatres in Germany.

Ten years later, in 1981, Karl Baumgartner and Reinhard Brundig founded Pandora Film, which went on to become a leading European distributor of international independent films. The company established its reputation distributing highly ambitious arthouse films by Woody Allen, Pedro Almodóvar, Gianni Amelio, Theo Angelopoulus, Sergei Bodrov, Niki Caro, Jane Campion, Leos Carax, Henri-Georges Clouzot, Jaco van Dormael, Kim Ki-Duk, Atom Egoyan, Stephen Frears, Jean-Luc Godard, Yilmaz Güney, Michael Haneke, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Jim Jarmusch, Chen Kaige, Aki Kaurismäki, Bakhtiar Khudojnazarov, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Abbas Kiarostami, Takeshi Kinto, Akira Kurusawa, Emir Kusturica, Paul Leduc, Ang Lee, Mike Leigh, Mira Nair, Sally Potter, Alain Resnais, Jan Schütte, Alain Tanner, Andrej Tarkowski, Lars von Trier, Wim Wenders, Wayne Wang and many others.

In 2003, Karl Baumgartner founded Pallas Film, based in Halle/Saale (Germany), with Thanassis Karathanos.

That same year, he received the Award granted by Kunst- und Kulturstiftung der Sparkasse Bremen for his achievements and contribution to the European Film Industry. It was the first time that a producer had received this award. He won the prestigious Raimondo Rezzonico Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2004.

Karl Baumgartner is a member of the German and European Film Academy.

 INGRID RUBIO

Ingrid Rubio, born in Barcelona, had a brilliant start to her career as a film actress in 1996, landing parts in three top-notch movies: Más que amor, frenesí (Not Love, Just Frenzy), by Alfonso Albacete, David Menkes and Miguel Bardem, Más allá del jardín (Beyond the Garden), by Pedro Olea, and Taxi, by Carlos Saura. Recognition of her excellent work was immediate in the shape of different awards: Special Jury Mention at San Sebastian Festival in 1996 for Taxi and Goya for Best New Actress for Más allá del jardín in 1997.

In her following films, she also acted under the orders of important directors while extending her career to the international field: En brazos de la mujer madura (In Praise of Older Women, Manuel Lombardero, 1997), En dag til i solen (Water Easy Reach, Bent Hamer, 1998), El faro del Sur (The Lighthouse, Eduardo Mignogna, 1998), Extraños (Imanol Uribe, 1998), Un banco en el parque (Agustí Vila, 1999), La otra cara de la luna (Lluís Josep Comerón, 1999), Sé quién eres (I Know Who You Are, Patricia Ferreira, 2000), El viaje de Arián (Arian’s Journey, Eduard Bosch, 2000), Visionarios (Visionaires, Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, 2001, Official Selection in San Sebastian), La soledad era esto (This Was Solitude, Sergio Renán, 2001) and El alquimista impaciente (The Impatient Alchemist, Patricia Ferreira, 2002). She also garnered a number of important awards during this period: Best Actress Award at Montreal Festival for El faro del Sur, also winner of the Best Actress Award from the Argentine Film Critics Association and Special Mention at Málaga Festival for El viaje de Arián.

Recently, Ingrid Rubio has starred in Todas las azafatas van al cielo (Daniel Burman, 2002), La playa de los galgos (The Beach of the Greyhounds, Mario Camus, 2002), Haz conmigo lo que quieras (Kill Me Tender, Ramón de España, 2003), for which she was named Best Comedy Actress at Peñíscola Festival, Noviembre (Achero Mañas, 2003), which competed at San Sebastian, Hermanas (Julia Solomonoff, 2005), Tirant Lo Blanc (Vicente Aranda, 2006), Salvador (Manuel Huerga, 2006) and Trastorno (Fernando Cámara, 2006).

 IVÁN TRUJILLO

Iván Trujillo, born in 1954, graduated as a biologist from the UNAM (Autonomous University of Mexico) Faculty of Sciences. He later studied film at the University Centre for Film Studies (CUEC) in the same institution, where he now teaches History of Documentary Films.

As a filmmaker he has made a series of nature documentaries, winning the 1988 Ariel for best documentary short with Mariposa Monarca… adivinanzas para siempre.

In 1980, he started working at the UNAM Film Archive and, from 1989 until today, has been Director General of Film Activities at the same university.

Since then, he has given several conferences on different aspects of cinema, has been a jury member at different international festivals and has curated important Mexican film seasons abroad.

In April 1999, he was elected President of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), becoming the first Spanish-speaking President in its over 60 years of history, a position he continued to hold until June 2003.

In May 1999, he was decorated with the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government and in 2006 he received the Encomienda al Mérito Civil from the Spanish Government.
