Carlos Saura’s film Fados, shown as part as of the Zabaltegi-Pearls Special Screenings at San Sebastian Festival, will enjoy a particularly outstanding premiere at Victoria Eugenia Theatre, uniting today’s best fado singers in a concert following the movie.

Three of the biggest fado stars will come together for this unique presentation in San Sebastian. Mariza, who has just landed a Grammy Award nomination and has filled some of the most prestigious halls in the world in recent years, receiving countless prizes for her album Transparente (2006). The singer Camané, who crowned an important career of 25 years with his show Como sempre…como dantes andgarnered the Amalia Rodrigues Award for Best Male Fado Singer. And one of the great figures in the history of fado, Carlos do Carmo, who has taken Portuguese song all over the world in his over 40 years of artistic career, rounds off the bill.

After Flamenco (1995) and Tango (1998) –nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film-, in 2005 Carlos Saura completed his trilogy on modern urban song with Fados. After over two years of research into the subject, Carlos Saura takes an enormous step forward in his approximation to music. If, in his earlier musicals, Iberia, Flamenco, Tango... in Fados he makes a special effort with the plot and image to reflect the birth of a suburban, dockland music which is in itself a synthesis of all of the music born towards the end of the 19th century. The film will be distributed by Wanda and will open at cinemas on November 23rd.

Fados will be screened at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre on Friday 21 at 18:30. The special concert given by Mariza, Camané and Carlos do Carmo will follow the film. Tickets for the screening cost €10 and will go on sale on Sunday, as will all tickets for the San Sebastian Festival.
