Films in Progress continues to fulfil its position as a necessary platform that opens the way to Latin American feature films faced with difficulties at the post-production stage. It fosters coming together, dialogue and interaction between professionals in the Latin American and European film worlds and boosts the existence of singular and independent works, necessary for a rich and diversified cinematic landscape.
190 films have been submitted for Films in Progress 27 from 17 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The Toulouse-San Sebastian selection committee has selected 6 films, of which 4 are directorial debuts (A cidade onde envelheço / The City Were I’m Getting Old, Desde allá, Los Nadie y Maquinaria Panamericana) and 2 are co-productions between Latin America and Europe (A cidade onde envelheço / The City Were I’m Getting Old y Eva no duerme). The director Pablo Agüero once again presents a project to Films in Progress, repeating his previous experience with 77 Doronship, which was later selected for Zabaltegi – New Directors.
Francisca is a young Portuguese woman who’s been living in Brazil for a year. At her mother’s behest, she welcomes Teresa, a fellow citizen she’d lost contact with, into her home. While Teresa is enthralled, discovering the place where she means to settle and escape the crisis that has taken over her homeland, Francisca decides to go back to Lisbon. The film follows each woman’s adventures in the city and the deep bond of friendship that grows between them, forcing them to deal with conflicting desires: a will to leave for an unknown country and a relentless longing for home. Debut film.
Evita Perón has died. She is the most loved, but also the most hated political figure of Argentina. A leading expert is given the task of embalming her. After months of hard work, the result is perfect. Meanwhile in Argentina, the coups come one after the other and some dictators want to delete Evita’s legacy from the people’s memory. Her body therefore becomes the focal point of clashes lasting for 25 years. 25 years during which Evita was a more powerful figure than any other living politician.
A story of hate, broken promises, and the brotherly love of five friends who met in the streets of a hostile city. These is the story of young people who are eager to travel and who find refuge and opportunities in street art and music. Debut film.
It’s Friday morning at Panamerican Machinery Inc., a company specialising in selling and repairing machines for construction and destruction. The employees are already winding down for the weekend, engaging in little rituals and routines when an unexpected turn of events shakes their peaceful monotony.
Don Alejandro, the boss, lies dead at the back of the warehouse. The discovery changes everything – the company is bankrupt, the elderly workforce have no prospects of employment elsewhere and no hope for any retirement funds. In a state of confusion, fear and grief they agree to lock themselves in their workplace. Debut film.
After an accident turns the love of Barbara's life into a dimwit stranger, she gets involved with a man who can offer her stability, minus the passion. She tries to adapt to her new fate, but the memory of lost love continues to hound her. Until she realises that what really matters isn't lost.
