Gas Natural Fenosa - Cinergy

For the second year running, Gas Natural Fenosa brings Cinergy, a project taking yet another step forward in the energy company’s film industry sponsorship while demonstrating its commitment to the sector. This is an initiative intended to convey energy efficiency to the general public by producing short films to raise awareness on the importance of saving energy. The second edition of Cinergy consists of the production, with the backing of El Terrat, of three comedy shorts shot by directors Isabel Coixet, Santiago Segura and Paco León with well-known Spanish actors and actresses. Paco León’s short stars Carmen Maura and Secun de la Rosa; the one by Santiago Segura, Anabel Alonso, Enrique Villén and Joaquín Reyes, and the one by Isabel Coixet, Silvia Abril, Julián López, Kika Miró, Rodrigo Guirao and the humourist Andreu Buenafuente. In addition, with a view to promoting young talent, the company launched a screenwriting competition for film and audiovisual communication students to produce a fourth short film as part of this project. The winner of the Cinergy Talent competition is Josep Pujel Bonet, who will present the short film Beta at one of our country’s most important festivals. Vaca Paloma “Relations between a mother and son are often complicated, particularly if the son has a movie-loving dairy cow with supernatural powers. The mother must accept that, at one stage in life, she will lose the exclusive ability to provide energy produced solely by love, while the son, delighted with his cow, will start to feel ruffled at his mother’s constant offers of advice.” Paco León’s short film Vaca Paloma will be screened on 18 September at the San Sebastian Festival, of which Gas Natural Fenosa is the principal sponsor. The humorous short film, starring Carmen Maura and Secun de la Rosa, demonstrates the importance of saving energy. The production can be seen free of charge, in the Cinergy Room, Alderdi Eder Gardens, from September 18-26. Participants in the activities organised in this space will also be able to win film-related prizes during the Festival.

Pasolini - Roma

An exhibition looking at the Italian writer and filmmaker, Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975), through his relations with Rome, an approach that implies delving deep into everything that forms and defines the man: poetry, politics, civil commitment, sex, friendship and cinema. PASOLINI ROMA is a project co-produced by the CCCB, the Cinémathèque Française in Paris, the Azienda Palaexpo – Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome and the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin. It also has the support of the European Union’s programme for Culture. Jordi Balló, Alain Bergala and Gianni Borgna curated this event. PASOLINI ROMA is structured into six chronological sections corresponding to the six periods in the life and creation of Pier Paolo Pasolini. It begins with his arrival to Rome on 28 January 1950 and ends on 2 November 1975, when his lifeless body was found near Ostia.

Elías, my life: Photographs of a lifetime of cinema

Exhibition organised by the San Telmo Museum and curated by the photographer Pedro Usabiaga, focussing on the figure and work of producer Elías Querejeta. The exhibition consists of 80 black & white images looking at his films, his career and some of the most important moments in his personal life. The majority of the photographs in the exhibition have never been seen before. The exhibition is divided into four different blocks, starting in the 60s and continuing until today. The first two blocks show his films in two different periods: the darkest years of life under Franco (1963-1977) and cinema in democracy (1977-until today). The other two blocks look at a more personal sphere: the third is dedicated to the producer’s presence at the San Sebastian Festival and the last shows a more private Elías, in different aspects of his personal life (sport, the family, friends, etc.).

Krzysztof Kieślowski

Commemorative exhibition in tribute to the Polish master of cinema, Krzysztof Kieślowski (1941-1996). The event has two parts: “Traces and Memory”, created by the Łódź Museum of Cinematography, is a retrospective documenting Kieślowski’s personal life and artistic career. Someone who considered himself to be a pessimist pumped hope into cinema and its lovers. Someone who, in the search for independence and peace, constantly set challenges for himself, for a system in which he was blocked, and for contemporary cinema and culture. The design includes photographs, press cuttings, posters, numerous publications and archive material never seen before. All of it shows a Kieślowski during his meetings with the public and working on films like “The Scar”, “Decalogue” and “Three Colours”. The second part of the exhibition features black & white pictures taken by Kieślowski during his first year as a student at the Directing Department of the Łódź National Higher School of Film, Television and Theatre (1965/1966). The images form a complex portrait of the city, shown from the point of view of the human being, who would always be the central theme of the films made by the future moviemaker. They lend testimony to the sensitivity and maturity of an excellent observer.

Platea: Cinema seen by photographers

Organised by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), this exhibition assembles 40 photographs demonstrating the take on cinema produced by leading Spanish photographers throughout their careers as they approached the world of the big screen from their particular points of view. Between 10 September and 4 October 2015, the 63rd San Sebastian Festival will host the first stop on the tour of this exhibition conceived by AC/E to accompany Spanish film festivals with the idea of bringing it to the numerous audiences who flock to these rendezvous with cinema. The curator and also photographer, Blanca Berlín, and the assistant curator Sonia Gontán, were responsible for selecting the photographers and their points of view which, though different, all share, from the creativity of their medium, the admiration and empathy that cinema prompts in all of us. Photography and cinema have been mutual fountains of information for more than a century, proof of which is this exhibition showing the works of 40 photographers of recognised prestige at home and abroad: Amparo Garrido, Ana Muller, Andreu Catalá Roca, Antonio Lafuente, Antonio Tabernero, Beatriz Moreno, Beatriz Romero, Blanca Berlín, Carlos Pérez Siquier, Castro Prieto, Chema Conesa, Chema Madoz, Ciuco Gutiérrez, Colita, Cristina de Middel, Cristina García Rodero, Eduardo Momeñe, Encarna Marín, Francesc Catalá Roca, Gabriela Grech, Gerardo Custance, Hélène Bergaz, Joan Fontcuberta, Jordi Socías, Juan Manuel Díaz Burgos, Laura Torrado, Linarejos Moreno, Ma Casanova, Manel Esclusa, Manuel Vilariño, Martí Llorens, Miguel Ángel Mendo, Mikel Bastida, Nicolás Muller, Ouka Leele, Ramón Masats, Ricard Terré, Rosa Muñoz, Rosell Meseguer and Sergio Belinchón.

Expressions of Spanish Cinema

An exhibition assembling a selection of black & white photographs of actresses, actors, directors and other Spanish cinema professionals taken by Chus Arcas since 2010 for the TCM television channel. These are not studio portraits, but snapshots capturing moments of emotion. “All of the photrographs were taken following long interviews recorded for TCM programmes” explains Arcas. “At the end of the talk, I only asked them for a couple of minutes which were short, but unrepeatable since the interviews had almost always succeeded in creating an intimate atmosphere.”
Sociedad Fotográfica de Gipuzkoa (San Juan Kalea, 27. 20003 San Sebastián). September 16 to October 7 Monday to Friday from 17:00-21:00 and Saturdays from 17:00-20:00.

Hotel Astoria7 c/ Sagrada Familia 1 Throughout the month of September.

Vinyland

“Vinyland” is a film about vinyl collection in the most vitalistic and personalised sense. The star is a real collector who plays himself. There is a part of the documentary in which we see his relationship with music, going to concerts, rehearsal venues, bars, record shops, markets, fairs, etc. And another part, fictional this time, where, by means of a radio interview, we gradually come to realise the degree of specialisation he has acquired. It is the phone calls to the programme that will put us on the trail of an urban legend circulating on the subject of his collection: the total number of singles it contains and the secret place he keeps it in. This musical docu-fiction lends particular importance to the soundtrack since the dialogues are minimal and the true meaning lies in the atmosphere created by each number within the original editing of images and audio, until opening a door to another dimension somewhere between urrealist and psychedelic. The local and international groups who collaborated in the project are well-known artists on the underground scene: Ty Segall, J.D. McPherson, Nikki Hill, Hi-Risers, Redd Kross, John Paul Keith, The Nomads, Kurt Baker, Chris Knox, Gallon Drunk, The Maharajas, The Dirtbombs, The See See, The Flight Reaction, Mikal Cronin, Graham Day, The Boy Scouts, Guadalupe Plata, Pelo Mono, The Limboos, The Lookers, Lie Detectors, Last Fair Deal, Dr. Maha’s, Microcosmos, Ex-Novios, Cancer Moon and Balerdi Balerdi.

TOPIC

Yet another year TOPIC and the San Sebastian International Film Festival join hands to bring Tolosa the pleasure of enjoying some of the films screened at the Zinemaldi. This year will see the screening of two films from the Classic Retrospective dedicated in 2015 to Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack: ‘King Kong’ and ‘Son of Kong’, both from 1933. Cooper and Schoedsack’s contribution to fantasy cinema didn’t stop at this masterpiece remodelling the Beauty and the Beast myth; it also created a hallucinating and antediluvian plastic universe taking its inspiration from Gustave Doré and innovated stop motion animation, a technique closely linked to the world of puppetry, on which numerous workshops given at the International Puppetry Centre have focussed ever since its creation. In addition to screening the films, we will connect the prestigious San Sebastian Festival with the carnival celebrations in Tolosa by installing in the TOPIC the King Kong inspired by Cooper & Schoedsack’s films, created by the interior designer Iñaki Goikoetxea for one of the editions of the famous carnival. The official handover of the Tolosan King Kong will take place on September 18 at 19:00. The films in question can be seen in screenings before and after the event.

I want to live in Basque

Presentation of the “Euskaraz bizi nahi dut” (I want to live in Basque) short film awards. Screening of a selection of the best works submitted to the competition. At the gala, apart from the screenings and presentation of awards, a tribute will be paid to a person or entity to have made some kind of a contribution to cinema in the Basque language. The session will take place at the 63rd Festival and will last for one hour. This is the fourth edition of the “Euskaraz bizi nahi dut” short film competition and its third in collaboration with the San Sebastian Festival. The competition falls within the intiative of the same name and its objective is to convey the idea of “Euskaraz bizi nahi dut” in film language. The short films screened at the gala will therefore take this idea as their base, giving reasons for living in Basque, portraying the situations suffered by people who want to live in the language and the feelings it prompts in them (unease, joy, etc.). Participants in the gala will observe the way each author understands what it means to live in Basque, their experience, and will discover how people go about their lives in the Basque language.

Masterclass Work in Progress "Memorias de un hombre en pijama"

From the creators of “Arrugas” (Wrinkles), released at the 59th San Sebastian Festival in 2011, winner of two Goya Academy Awards (Best Animated Film and Best Adapted Screenplay), another 22 international accolades and sold all over the world, we now launch the 2D animated feature film “Memorias de un hombre en pijama” (Memoirs of a Man in Pyjamas), latest adaptation by the acclaimed Paco Roca, brought to life by the same creative team and with the same mission to achieve international success. We will explain how and when the idea came about and the secrets of the adaptation, including how the script was written, tone and genre, how financing was obtained, the pre-production timeline, development and participation, pre-production, the technical and artistic team, creation of the storyboard, the planning and technical screenplay, the voice recording, creation of the animatics, colour studies, character design, background design and the start of production

Spanish and Latin American Critical Duet

One of the functions of the Associació Catalana de Crítics i Escriptors Cinematogràfics (ACCEC) is to maintain relations of collaboration with different film festivals. Until now, it has worked with Catalan festivals and others throughout Spain with specific programming proposals and specialised juries, apart from participation in the international juries organised by FIPRESCI at festivals in Spain (Gijón, Seville, San Sebastian, Valladolid) and in other countries. It was only a matter of time before we addressed wider collaboration with the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Aware that one of the Festival trademarks is attention to Latin American cinema, particularly in its Horizontes Latinos and Films in Progress sections, from the ACCEC we want to contribute to that exchange between Spain and Latin America with a new activity at the Festival: dialogue on criticism in Latin America comparing the views of a Spanish critic to those of a counterpart from a Latin American country. Around the conversation and discussion between two critics, one from Spain and another from Latin America, we believe many questions could arise that would interest critics all over the world. All of these issues, which differ according to the country given their different sociopolitical situations and their different relationship with cultural dissemination centres (USA and Europe), are capable of shedding light on the comparison between critics in Spain and in Latin America. From the ACCEC we therefore propose that the Festival host a meeting between one Spanish critic and another from Latin America, taking a different country for each edition. The long-term result would provide a good reflection on relations between Spain and Latin America and a good platform for disseminating the criticism of other countries in San Sebastian. The first meeting of the 2015 edition will have as its participants Diego Lerer, Argentine critic and member of the New Directors Jury, and Jaime Pena, programmer at the CGAI-Filmoteca de Galicia and critic with different publications.

Craft Fair

Yet another year Lur kolektiboa organises the Zinemaldia craft fair sponsored by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa by means of its Department of Innovation, Rural Development and Tourism with collaboration of the Film Festival Director, José Luis Rebordinos, and of the entire Zinemaldia organisation. Thirty artisans from Gipuzkoa and guests from other places will exhibit their work and give a series of workshops. Like last year, the fair will be characterised by decoration according to a retrospective organised by Zinemaldia; thus, this year, the participating stands will be decorated in the style of modern Japanese cinema and culture, just as the demonstration and participation workshops will be dedicated to crafts in that country. For 10 days visitors will therefore enjoy workshops on subjects such as Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), Gyotaku (fish printing on paper), Zentangle (drawings with repetitive designs on stones); Manga illustration and Japanese book binding. All workshops will be given by the artisan themselves, thereby offering participants the opportunity to learn their trade first hand.
