For the second edition running, the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo collaborates with the San Sebastian Festival. This backing, framed within the objective of constructing a global citizenry committed to human rights and the promotion of cultural diversity, materialises in presentation of the Cooperación Española Award, the organisation of a round table on co-productions between Europe and Latin America in the framework of the Co-production Forum and the session on “Cinema, development and sustainability”, where an endeavour will be made, with the presentation of three projects, to demonstrate the potential of film as a catalyst of social transformation and awareness.
“Mujeres de cine” is a collective book, coordinated by Eugenio Fontaneda and published by AECID and Notorius, portraying the influence of the big Hollywood productions of the 20s and 30s on Spain, and more specifically on the Spanish women of the period. The book has the texts of David Felipe Arranz, Guillermo Balmori, Jesús Cano, Inmaculada Corcho, Matilde Eiroa, Eugenio Fontaneda and Moisés Rodríguez, with a preface by Isabel Coixet. It is illustrated with a collection (belonging to José Romero Sampedro) of original stills, close-ups of the most famous Hollywood actresses of the time, with images from the ABC Museum archives, the Enrique Alegrete collection and the Archivo General de la Administración, among other collections.
“Nómadas” is a documentary directed by Jorge Martínez, where the voice and the words of the writer Martín Caparrós and the images of the photographer Samuel Aranda come together to reflect on the life of a community of nomad herdsmen who receive the backing of the Spanish non-governmental development organisation RESCATE, in an inhospitable corner of Mali. There, somewhere in the Sahel, Caparrós, Aranda and Martínez are the exceptional witnesses of a way of life dating back thousands of years, and endangered. The documentary is one of the results of the Agreement signed between the AECID and RESCATE to improve the conditions of life of the herding communities of the Sahel.
“El cine y las 5 P”: With the backing of the AECID, the producer and director Manuel Serrano has prepared an audiovisual presentation on how film can help to achieve the 2030 Agenda, on the Development Goals agreed to by the international community (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs). The 2030 Agenda revolves around five core issues: PLANET, PEOPLE, PROSPERITY, PEACE AND PARTNERSHIPS – known in English as the 5 P. The talk is built on the basis of five sequences from films related to the 5 P, and shifts from the spirit of criticism to positive suggestion: the film language communicates values, asks questions and transmits behaviours; at the end of the day, it can invite the spectator to join the challenges demanded by a development that is sustainable and based on human rights.
Participants in the session will include Jorge Martínez, Martín Caparrós, Samuel Aranda, Eugenio Fontaneda and Manuel Serrano.
