This year the Festival will be celebrating its 60th consecutive edition with the same enthusiasm felt the day it first saw the light on September 21st 1953. [+]
In the occupied France of 1943 an old sculptor and his wife live in a small town not far from the Spanish border. Several years have gone by since the 80 year-old artist Marc Cros stopped sculpting. He has lived through two wars and, disillusioned, expects nothing much of life or the human species. But one day in the street his wife Lea picks up a young woman, Merce, who is on the run from Franco's army. The couple offer Merce the chance to live in the sculptor's workshop and, while she's there, to model for what will be the last work by old Cros. Slowly, a beautiful relationship is born between the young girl who is just starting out in life and the old man who senses that his end is near. In the mountain workshop, the model and the artist talk simply and openly about everything around them.
Holds an Academy Award (Belle Epoque, 1993), a Silver Bear (El año de las luces, 1986) and several Goyas. His films include Opera prima (1980), Mientras el cuerpo aguante (1982), Sal gorda (1983), Sé infiel y no mires con quién (1985), El sueño del mono loco (Twisted Obsession, 1989), Two Much (1995), La niña de tus ojos (The Girl of Your Dreams, 1998), Calle 54 (2000), El embrujo de Shanghai (2002), El milagro de Candeal (2004), El baile de la Victoria (2009, Official Selection at the San Sebastian Festival) and Chico y Rita (2010). He founded the film review Casablanca, is author of the Diccionario de Cine and editor of the Diccionario del Jazz Latino. He has won 8 Grammies for his work as a music producer.
