The uncertainty that prevailed in the days following the tragic events of the 11th of September meant that some guests decided not to come to San Sebastián. Among these were Julie Andrews and Warren Beatty who had already accepted the distinction of the Donostia Award.

These two distinguished actors were not in the right mood to travel and take part in a festive event, as they disclosed through the letters they both sent saying they were sorry and that they intended to come to the Festival next year which also coincides with its fiftieth anniversary.

The sudden death of Francisco Rabal deprived us of the pleasure of personally presenting him with the Donostia Award for life achievement which he had so gladly accepted, and which was collected at an emotional homage to the actor by his grandson, Liberto Rabal.
