Due to the declaration of war in 1939, Gerd and her husband David prepare to leave France. During the journey, Gerd has a brief romance with Pierre, a French soldier who has been called up. This episode leads to her break-up with her husband. Gerd begins a new life. She combines work and caring for her daughter with her desire to make a film.
