The Müllers are a family in decline, where the parents barely speak to each other and their son Franz isolates himself in his hobby of model aeroplane building. The father tries to save the family and reorganise the small carpentry workshop he owns. The arrival of the grandmother, a merchant interested in old machinery, and Franz's encounter with a girl change the situation.
