Born in Uruguay, she graduated at the EMAD (Escuela Municipal de Arte Dramático) and studied Cinema at the EICTV, International Film School founded by the Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez (San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba).
Her first film as a producer was Pablo Dotta’s directorial debut, El dirigible, the first Uruguayan movie to participate in the Festival de Cannes (Semaine de la Critique 1994).
In 2011 she received the Eurimages Co-production Development Award from the European Film Academy.
Her film credits include: El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in their Eyes), directed by Juan José Campanella, winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; Álex de la Iglesia’s Balada triste de trompeta (The Last Circus, Silver Lion at Venice 2010) and Los crímenes de Oxford (The Oxford Crimes); and Juan Carlos Tabío’s film Lista de espera (Waiting List,Cannes 2000) and Gerardo Herrero’s El misterio Galíndez (The Galíndez File, San Sebastian Official Selection 2003).
She has co-produced films like Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro; Triage by the Academy Award-winner Danis Tanovic; Fabián Bielinsky’s El aura (The Aura); Andrés Wood’s Machuca, and the Academy Award nominee El hijo de la novia (Son of the Bride), by Juan José Campanella.
She has also participated in international co-productions such as Eric Rohmer’s Triple Agent; Sweet Sixteen, Looking for Eric and The Wind That Shakes the Barley (Palme d’Or at Cannes 2006), by Ken Loach; and Paul Auster’s The Inner Life of Martin Frost (San Sebastian Official Selection 2007).
Currently in post-production, she is working on Food Guide to Love, by Teresa de Pelegrí and Dominic Harari; Isabel Coixet’s Panda Eyes; and Jorge Drexler’s documentary Y que empiece el carnaval.
Mariela Besuievsky also formerly taught in the Production Department of the ECAM (Madrid Film School) and at the EICTV in Cuba.
