Nine films presented at the last edition of the San Sebastian Festival have landed 21 awards at the 32nd Goya Awards. Handia, which competed in the Official Selection and won the Special Jury Prize, was the night’s big award winner.
Handia was hailed with ten awards in the categories of Best Original Screenplay (Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño, Andoni de Carlos and Jose Mari Goenaga), New Actor (Eneko Sagardoy), Cinematography (Javier Agirre), Original Music (Pascal Gaigne), Production Manager (Ander Sistiaga), Editing (Laurent Dufreche and Raúl López), Art Direction (Mikel Serrano), Costume Design (Saioa Lara), Makeup and Hairstyles (Ainhoa Eskisabel, Olga Cruz and Gorka Aguirre) and Special Effects (Jon Serrano and David Heras).
El autor (The Motive), also selected for the Official Selection, carried off the award for Best Leading Actor (Javier Gutiérrez) and Supporting Actor (Adelfa Calvo).
Muchos hijos, un mono y un castillo (Lots of Kids, a Monkey and a Castle) directed by Gustavo Salmerón, screened as part of Zabaltegi-Tabakalera after winning an award at Karlovy Vary, was chosen as Best Documentary.
The Best European Film Award was garnered by The Square, opening film of this year’s Zabaltegi-Tabakalera after winning the Golden Palme at Cannes. And Una mujer fantástica (A Fantastic Woman) opening film of Horizontes Latinos after winning an award in Berlin, took Best Foreign-Language Film of the Year.
Spanish television’s TVE Gala movie, La llamada, bagged Best Original Song (Leiva).
Estiu 1993 (Summer 1993), which was part of the Made in Spain selection after its premiere at the Berlinale and winning an award in Malaga, landed the Goyas for Best New Director (Carla Simón), New Actress (Bruna Cusí) and Supporting Actor (David Verdaguer).
In No sé decir adiós, presented in Made in Spain after screening in Malaga, the work of Nathalie Poza garnered Best Lead Actress, and Verónica, screened in the same section, was applauded with the Best Sound (Aitor Berenguer, Gabriel Gutiérrez and Nicolas de Poulpiquet).
