At yesterday’s gala in Malaga, three of the Spanish films competing in the Festival’s Official Selection bagged eight Goya Awards. Alejandro Amenábar’s Mientras dure la guerra (While at War) landed five recognitions in the Production Design, Production Manager, Makeup and Hairstyles, Costume Design and Supporting Actor categories, the latter for Eduard Fernández, while La trinchera infinita (The Endless Trench) by Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga, winner of the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards at San Sebastian, won the Goyas for Best Sound and Lead Actress going to Belén Cuesta.
Belén Funes won the Best New Director Goya for La hija de un ladrón (A Thief’s Daughter) her first film, which participated in the Official Selection and for which Greta Fernandéz carried off the Silver Shell for Best Actress ex aequo with Nina Hoss.
For its part, La odisea de los giles (Heroic Losers), a participant in the Official Selection – Special Screenings, landed the Goya for Best Iberoamerican Film.
Two of the films presented in Perlak also received accolades: O que arde / Lo que arde (Fire Will Come), winner of the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, notched up two Goyas, while Les Misérables by the French moviemaker Ladj Ly and nominated for the Academy Award in the Best International Feature category, was named Best European film, after bagging the Jury Prize at Cannes ex aequo with Bacarau and the European Discovery Award at the European Film Awards.
Salvador Simó’s animated movie Buñuel en el laberinto de las tortugas (Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles) selected for Made in Spain and premiered at the Malaga Festival, won the Goya for Best Animation Film, a category in which it also landed an accolade at the European Film Awards.
Dolor y Gloria (Pain and Glory), a participant in Made in Spain, was the big winner of the night, garnering seven Goya Awards, particularly Best Supporting Actress for Julieta Serrano, Best Actor for Antonio Banderas, Best Original Screenplay and Director for Pedro Almodóvar, as well as Best Film. The movie, which premiered at the last Festival de Cannes, is nominated for the Academy Award in the Best International Feature Film category and its protagonist, Antonio Banderas, Best Actor at the Festival de Cannes, for the Best Actor Oscar.
