Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Having trained at the ESCAC, Juan Antonio Bayona (Barcelona, Spain) set out on his career as a film director with El orfanato / The Orphanage (Made in Spain, 2007), premiered at the Semaine de la Critique in Cannes. The film harvested seven Goya awards, including Best New Director.
His second film, Lo imposible / The Impossible (2012) participated out of competition in the Official Selection of the San Sebastián Festival, won five Goya Awards, including Best Director, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress (Naomi Watts).
He was given the National Cinematography Award in 2013, becoming the youngest filmmaker ever to receive it.
He returned to San Sebastián’s Official Selection in 2016 to present, also out of competition, A Monster Calls, winner of nine Goya awards, once again including Best Director.
In 2018 he was chosen by Steven Spielberg to direct Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and in 2023 premiered out of competition in Venice La sociedad de la nieve / Society of the Snow (Perlak), winner of twelve Goya Awards and two Academy Awards nominations, including Best International Film, as well as the Audience Award in San Sebastián. Since its release, the film has become one of the films not in the English language most viewed in the history of Netflix.
