In Le Mage du Kremlin / The Wizard of the Kremlin, Oliver Assayas delves into the political forces behind Russia’s post-Cold War transformation, focusing on Vadim Baranov, the mastermind who shaped the president’s political persona.Co-written with Emmanuel Carrère, Assayas adapts Giuliano da Empoli’s novel to reveal how Soviet totalitarian systems resurfaced under the guise of newfound freedoms. The film, drawing a striking parallel to his earlier work Carlos, presents a chronicle of Russia’s brief ‘90s period of “freedom” quickly morphing into a system reminiscent of old totalitarianism. Through archival footage and political intrigue, Assayas examines how political narratives are manipulated, not only in Russia but also in other democracies. Filmed in English, the choice highlights the challenges of casting Russian actors in a film critical of the regime.
