Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
In Maspalomas, directors Jose Mari Goenaga and Aitor Arregi explore the complexities of sexual identity, freedom, and ageing through the story of Vicente, a seventy-six-year-old man who has openly lived as gay for decades in Maspalomas. An accident forces him to return to San Sebastian, where he is admitted to a nursing home and decides to go back into the closet. The film explores how we often assume that ageing reduces sexual desire, challenging stereotypes with humour and sensitivity.
Actor José Ramón Soroiz, who portrays Vicente, initially hesitated to accept the role due to its intimacy scenes, but embraced the challenge, saying “this has been the most wonderful experience” of his life. Nagore Aranburu plays his daughter, in an emotional journey from grief to a deeper understanding of her father’s struggles.
Maspalomas is a poignant yet humorous film that illuminates the right to live as we are at any age, questioning social prejudices and showing that life, including desire, does not fade with age.
