The surprise film at the San Sebastián Festival’s 73rd edition will be Frankenstein, the new version of Mary Shelley’s classic tale directed by the Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz and Mia Goth. The film will screen tomorrow Friday in the Principal Theatre at 21:45 and in the Victoria Eugenia at 22:30, while the Velodrome will host a third screening on its giant screen on Saturday at 18:00.
The film, which was included in the official selection at the last Venice Festival, tells the tale of Frankenstein, a brilliant but self-obsessed scientist who brings a new being into existence during a monstrous experiment, leading to the downfall of both the creator and his tragic creation.
The Mexican director has created a characteristic filmmaking style combining horror, fantasy and an exuberant and personal visual imagery. Since his debut with Cronos (Zabaltegi, 1994), he has directed and produced numerous acclaimed films, including El espinazo del diablo / The Devil’s Backbone (Made in Spanish, 2001), El laberinto del fauno / Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Mimic (1997), Hellboy (2004), Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015) and The Shape of Water (2017), which was nominated for 13 Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture and Best Director. His first animated stop motion film, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022), which he directed together with the deceased Mark Gustafson, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Since recovering the tradition of programming a surprise film in 2019, the San Sebastián Festival has shown the following titles in this section: Joker (Todd Phillips, 2019), Sportin’ Life (Abel Ferrara, 2020), Spencer (Pablo Larraín, 2021), Blonde (Andrew Dominik, 2022), The Killer (El asesino, David Fincher, 2023) and Joker: Folie à Deux (Todd Phillips, 2024).
Since 2022, the surprise film has been sponsored by the Antiguo Berri construction company.
Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley's classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
