The Voice of Hind Rajab, directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, has won the Euskadi Basque Country Agenda 2030 Award. For the fourth consecutive year, this award has been presented by the Basque Government at the San Sebastián Festival to the film that best reflects the values of sustainability and solidarity, which are central to the Sustainable Development Goals promoted by the 2030 Agenda in both the United Nations and the Basque Country. The €20,000 prize goes to the majority producer of the feature film.
The jury was made up of the actress and director Carolina Yuste, the writer Harkaitz Cano and the director of Social Innovation with the Basque Government, Asier Aranbarri. The presentation ceremony took place in Tabakalera’s Prisma and the event was attended by Saja Kilani and Motaz Malhees, stars of the winning film, José Luis Rebordinos, the Festival Director as well as the First Vice-President and Minister of Culture and Linguistic Policy, Ibone Bengoetxea.
“Because art is also born out of urgency, and when terror seems to steal our words to impose its paralysing silence, The Voice of Hind Rajab shows us an alternative to fear and paralysis, forcing us to act and take sides, showing us an extraordinary team of people who are already doing so”, says the jury's statement.
The actors in the film, which tells the story of a Palestinian girl’s murdered by the Israeli army, considered it an honour to receive the award. “I have never felt more connected to a European country. Thank you very much. With The Voice of Hind Rajab, what we can do as artists is turn hope into action and I hope that, with your help, it reaches as many eyes as possible. Let your voices be an echo for our children," said Kilani and Malhees.
Ibone Bengoetxea, on behalf of the Basque Government, condemned the genocide in Palestine and demanded an immediate ceasefire. She emphasised that “cinema awakens consciences, opens debates and drives changes that would otherwise be impossible”. The Voice of Hind Rajab reminds us that, when violence seeks to silence, cinema can become a collective voice. It forces us to look at what we would rather not see and challenges us to take sides. This is the power of cinema: it makes us more human in the face of barbarism," she said.
Included in the Perlak Section, the Franco-Tunisian production The Voice of Hind Rajab beat the other seven titles in the running for the Euskadi Basque Country 2030 Agenda Award: Maspalomas (Official Selection), Belén (Official Selection), Jianyu laide mama / Her Heart Beats in Its Cage (Official Selection), Nuestra tierra / Landmarks (Horizontes Latinos), Bajo las banderas, el sol / Under the Flags, the Sun (Zabaltegi-Tabakalera), Ciudad sin sueño / Sleepless City (Perlak) and It Was Just an Accident / Un Simple Accident (Perlak).
