Alexandre Desplat and Alberto Iglesias

Alberto Iglesias (Talk to Her, The Skin I Live In, Parallel Mothers) and Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shape of Water, The King’s Speech) come together to talk about their careers in cinema and the creative process behind their scores. A conversation that offers insight into how they understand film music and how their compositions have shaped some of the most memorable films of recent decades. The session will be moderated by the composer Paula Olaz.

Paula Olaz (Pamplona, 1989) is a Spanish composer specialized in soundtracks for film, television, theater, dance, and video games, recognized for merging artistic creativity with scientific research. Graduated cum laude from Berklee College of Music and trained in neuropsychology, she has worked on more than 20 feature films —such as Raqa, El bus de la vida, Verano en rojo or Las Buenas Compañías— as well as series like El Clan Olimpia (Disney+) and La Frontera (Amazon Prime). A regular collaborator of Pascal Gaigne since 2017, she has received the Lorca Award for Best Original Score and has earned several Goya Award nominations. Her music has been performed by the Basque National Orchestra, and in 2025 a monographic concert entitled Navarra suena de cine will be held. A pioneer in data sonification, she has developed projects with the ESA, CERN, and HEAD, and combines her artistic career with scientific outreach and teaching. Co-founder of the United Love Movement and author of choral works such as Lux Aeterna, she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in music therapy at ArtEZ University, exploring the transformative and therapeutic power of music.

Alberto Iglesias, born in San Sebastián, is one of Spain’s most renowned and internationally acclaimed film composers. With more than thirty years of experience, he has written the music for over forty feature films and worked with directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Icíar Bollaín, Julio Médem, Isabel Coixet, Oliver Stone, and Ridley Scott.

His close collaboration with Pedro Almodóvar has produced iconic scores such as Talk to Her, Volver, and Parallel Mothers. He has received twelve Goya Awards, the Best Soundtrack Award at Cannes (Pain and Glory, 2019), several European Film Awards, two World Soundtrack Awards, and has been nominated for the Oscars four times.

Renowned for the emotional depth and sophistication of his orchestrations, Iglesias has established himself as a unique artistic voice in contemporary cinema.

Composer

Alexandre Desplat, a renowned composer and true cinephile, has created a unique musical identity that gives each film a special tone and reveals the invisible emotions of its characters. Prolific and versatile, he writes for cinema, theatre, ballet, chamber music, and concerts, standing out for the sophistication of his orchestrations and the richness inherited from his classical training and cultural mix. He has collaborated with filmmakers such as Terrence Malick, Greta Gerwig, Wes Anderson, Kathryn Bigelow, Guillermo del Toro, and David Fincher, among many others. His work with violinist Dominique “Solrey” Lemonnier marked a new use of strings in film music. With two Oscars, two Golden Globes, two Grammys, three BAFTAs, and three César awards, Desplat is one of the most awarded and admired composers on the international scene.
