Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, a symbol of resistance since he was arrested back in 2009, returns with Un simple accident / It Was Just an Accident, a film that bagged the Palme d’Or at Cannes (adding to his Golden Lion in Venice for The Circle and Golden Bear at the Berlinale for Taxi Tehran) can be seen this year at Perlak.
Panahi views the film not merely as a tale about forgiveness or revenge. “It’s simpler than that: in the end, it all comes down to humanity,” he said. The film, triggered by a chance event, explores how tragedy often gives rise to absurd moments of humour, something Panahi attributes to the Iranian people’s ability to cope with suffering through laughter.
Reflecting on his status as a global symbol of resistance, Panahi expresses gratitude for the solidarity he’s received from filmmakers worldwide, saying that “there’s no pain as painful as feeling alone.” Despite working under clandestine conditions, he remains hopeful that his films will one day reach Iranian audiences, trusting that time and fate may lead to their eventual release.
