Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Yesterday, the Kursaal Press Club hosted the launch of “Lillian Hellman: Ficción, memoria y compromiso / Lillian Hellman: Fiction, memory and commitment”, a bilingual book co-published by the Festival, the Basque Film Archive, and the Spanish Film Archive. The book accompanies the Zinemaldia retrospective dedicated to Hellman, exploring her legacy as a trailblazing playwright, screenwriter, and memoirist. Quim Casas, member of the Selection Committee and the publisher of the book, emphasized that this retrospective is aimed at rediscovering Hellman, often misunderstood, highlighting her impact on both cinema and theatre.
The book includes essays by Hannah McGill, Nuria Vidal, and María Adell. Adell’s essay, focused on Hellman’s theatrical career, examines how her work was ahead of her time, with her method of self-exploration through characters, and her influence on American theatre, notably Tennessee Williams. Despite her acclaim, she faced professional opposition, including from playwright and screenwriter Arthur Miller, who doubted her ambition and political commitment.
Vidal’s chapter on Hellman as a screenwriter reveals her early work in Hollywood before shifting to theatre in New York. She also discusses her political activism, particularly her antifascist stance during the Spanish Civil War, which aligned her with intellectuals supporting the Republican cause. The book also explores Hellman’s relationship with feminism. While she never identified herself as a feminist, her defiance of gender norms turned her into a symbol for the second wave of feminism. Hellman’s moral stance, political engagement, and historical optimism were celebrated during the presentation as key aspects of her enduring legacy.
