The Shock Doctrine, the documentary that Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross presented yesterday in San Sebastian adapted from the book by Naomi Klein, aims to provide an alternative history of the last 30 years and to raise awareness of the awful cost of the unfettered free market economic policies advocated by Milton Friedman, the Chicago School economist, which Klein believes were so unpopular that they could only be imposed on societies in a state of shock.
The film uses archive material of historical events such as the Pinochet coup in Chile, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Falklands War to claim that governments took advantage of these traumas to implement neo-liberal privatisation policies which “hurt the poor and benefited the rich”.
Winterbottom had also been encouraged to make the film because his daughter was going to vote for the first time in the forthcoming British elections and,“she needed to know how the world has become what it is.
