Diego Luna, best-known up to now as an actor, presented Abel, his debut as a director, yesterday in San Sebastián.He said that his film was about a mother’s love for her son. “It’s also a tribute to my children and I hope it brings you closer to your children.”
The film will go out on commercial release on the 2nd of October and has already been screened at Sundance and Cannes.
Luna also explained that his film was a fable, although in actual fact it was full of autobiographical elements. He changed some names and certain details but confessed that like the main character in his film, “I myself had this need to be a grown-up and belong to the world of adults, although I’ve been working since I was six and I have been financially independent since the age of fifteen.”
The director was accompanied at the presentation in the Kursaal by the film’s executive
producer John Malkovich who briefly intervened in the proceedings.
