Z365" or "Festival all year round" is the new strategic point of the Festival in which converge investigation, accompaniment and development of new talents (Ikusmira Berriak, Nest); training and cinematic knowledge transfer (Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, Zinemaldia + Plus, Filmmakers' dialogue); and investigation, disclosure and cinematic thought (Z70 project, Thought and Discussion and Research and publications).
Local director Juan Miguel Gutiérrez is back at the Festival once again to present his latest film
La plaza de la música, a documentary that tackles the problems faced by victims of exposure
to Asbestos.
The original inspiration for the film was the discovery that the death of his mother thirty years ago had not been due to cancer as he had thought but to asbestos dust. The family home was very close to a factory where they worked with asbestos and inhaling the dust that was given off there was what led to her death.
For six months the director collected documentation on asbestos and interviewed several workers and people who lived near factories that used this.
The film is built up like a spiritual journey the goes from the heart of the director to “the devastating effects that asbestos and capitalism have caused in third world countries.”To make it,Gutiérrez travelled from his home town all the way to India where they still do not take any safety precautions when handling asbestos.
