The cinema we didn’t see in the last decade

An old Ukrainian peasant prepares to die on the land where he has worked all his life. His grandson, Vasil, decides then that the council of the town must buy a tractor to share it among the farmers, who together will overcome the difficulties of nature and the oppression of the rich landowners.

BIOGRAPHY

ALEKSANDR DOVZHENKO

Aleksandr Dovzhenko (1894–1956) was a screenwriter, producer and film director. He is considered one of the most important pioneers of Soviet cinema along with Sergey Eisenstein and Vsévolod Pudovkin. He began his career in 1926, when he moved to Odessa, where he produced and directed his second script, Vasya reformátor, which he also directed. He obtained greater success with Zvenigorá in 1928, which established him as one of the most important filmmakers of the time. It is internationally recognized for its "Ukrainian Trilogy" (ArsenalEarth and Ivan), although Soviet critics despised it, as some considered its realism to be counterrevolutionary.
