Las Hurdes (Tierra sin pan)
The cinema we didn’t see in the last decade

Documentary short film that makes a portrait of Las Hurdes (Cáceres), one of the poorest and least developed regions of Spain in 1932. Unhealthiness, misery and lack of opportunities cause the emigration of young people and the loneliness of those who remain in this desolate region of Extremadura.

BIOGRAPHY

LUIS BUÑUEL

The father of cinematic surrealism and one of the most original directors ever, Buñuel (1900) made a deep impression with Un chien andalou (Andalusian Dog, 1929) and L'âge d'or (The Golden Age, 1930), his earliest works. He used his fertile imaginative fantasy to mercilessly attack the human being, the church and the middle classes; making well-rounded films including Nazarín (1958), Viridiana (1962), Tristana (1970), Belle de jour (1967) or Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, 1972). Las Hurdes is one of his first works.
