The story takes place in 1924. Alessio maniardi, an eighteen year-old student lives in a Sicilian city. He falls in love with a companion Giovanna who, as a show of love, gives him a red carnation as a present. The carnation becomes a fundamental object in his life: the fascist studetns see it in his lapel and choose him as a victim. Other studetns, communists, wwant to convert it into a symbol of their group. Always in his search of Giovanna, Alessio feel alone that for him represent violence, friendship, love and politics.
