Giacomo Casanova hopes to return to Venice after twenty-five years of exile, after a life dissipated by the Cortes of Europe. The old adventurer loves Marcolina with the illusion of rediscovering his youth, but she has relations with a young and handsome lieutenant, Lorenzi. Since Casanova's appeal to the fair sex is no longer enough, he must resort to other procedures. Lorenzi is ruined in the game and Casanova proposes to give him the sum lost on the condition that one night he will replace him in Marcolina's ranch. The lieutenant accepts, but imprisoned by a belated sense of dignity, waits outside Casanova and challenges the old conqueror to duel. The lieutenant falls dead and the old Casanova has the feeling of having killed himself.
