Umberto D.
The cinema we didn’t see in the last decade

Umberto Domenico Ferrari is a retiree who tries to survive with his miserable pension. Immersed in poverty, he lives in a pension, whose owner mistreats him because he fails to raise the money necessary to pay his room rent. The only friends he has in this world are a young maid and especially his dog Flike.

BIOGRAPHY

VITTORIO DE SICA

Vittorio De Sica (1901-1974) was an Italian director and actor, a leading figure in the neorealist movement. He started as an actor in his teens by joining a stage company in 1923. He turned to directing in 1940, making comedies, but with his fifth film I bambini ci guardano (The Children Are Watching Us, 1944), he revealed hitherto unsuspected depths and an extraordinarily sensitive touch with actors, especially children. It was also the first film he made with the writer Cesare Zavattini with whom he would subsequently make Sciuscià (Shoeshine, 1946) and Ladri di biciclette (Bicycle Thieves, 1948), heartbreaking studies of poverty in postwar Italy which won special Oscars before the foreign film category was officially established.
