Gishiki / The Ceremony
The cinema we didn’t see in the last decade

Upon receiving a shocking telegram from his cousin, a man recounts his early life, as a member of a broad family full of dark secrets that slowly reveal themselves through the clan ceremonies.

BIOGRAPHY

NAGISA ÔSHIMA

Nagisa Ôshima (1932), is a was a Japanese film director and screenwriter. After graduating from Kyoto University in 1954, where he studied political history, Ôshima was hired by film production company Shochiku Ltd. and quickly progressed to directing his own movies, in which he tends to expose contemporary Japanese materialism, while also examining what it means to be Japanese in the face of rapid industrialization and Westernization. Many of Ôshima's earlier films, such as Ai to kibô no machi (A Town of Love and Hope, 1959) and Taiyô no hakaba (Grave of the Sun, 1960), feature rebellious, underprivileged youths in anti-heroic roles. The film for which he is probably best-known in the West, Ai no korîda (The Realm of the Senses, 1976), screened at San Sebastián Film Festival last year.
