A retired German man decides to leave his hometown of Frankfurt for a few days and move with his chauffeur to the shores of a Swiss lake. He stays at the house of a friend from his youth who has inexplicably disappeared from his home. There he meets the housekeeper, a possessive and strange woman, and her two children. As the days go by, the idyllic relationships between them deteriorate and each one discovers their true, devouring personality.
