Kate, a mathematics professor at a university in Chicago, lives with Homer, a divorced construction contractor. Kate's father is getting remarried to Emma in New York. While in New York, during a family dinner, she meets Ben, her future stepmother's son, who has been forced to retire from sports due to an accident. He is also going through a deep family crisis with his wife.
