The subject of the film is a metaphor for Brazilian society. In the cramped space of the prison, the dynamics are somehow clear. The military middle class, the young, the old, the women, the Northwest, and the men, the South.
The encounter with other prisoners, the common criminal, the thief, the bandit, the homosexual.
Graciliano records all the data in his head, fights against his own prejudices and wishes to have a stay based on tolerance, generosity. Before being imprisoned, Graciliano experiences his dissatisfaction with his wife, with her work and the petty provincial society. For this reason, he comes to think that his imminent imprisonment would be a principle of freedom that would exempt him from all of this. He also thinks about the possibility of finishing his novel, in prison he will find material for his novel.
Once released, this will not make her forget his prison memories. Those who remained there will have to recover their lost freedom.
