Lombardy during the Middle Ages; rebels fight against the oppression of Federico de Barbarroja's local lieutenant, the Duke of Ulrich de Hesse. The leader of the rebels, Dardo, is been betrayed by his wife, who abandons him for Ulrich. However, Dardo hasa the love of the Duke's niece, Anne de Hesse, on his side. Finally, the rebels dressed as fools, get into Ulrich's castle and overpower his troops, thus liberating the country form German domination.
