Someone once said that God's only mistake was that he should've given man two lives: one to practice with and one to play with. But Santiago is about to put things straight. The point is that some bits fit into the story and some don't. What fits is that Santiago gets out of bed like any other morning, that his whole family is waiting for him in the kitchen, that they sing happy birthday when he appears at the door, that they kiss him, give him presents and tease him...but then appearances can be deceiving.
