Two strangeres, a beautiful Swiss governess and an English landowner, meet for three days in northern France to carry out the terms of a secret business agreement. He will giver her money to pay her father's debts and in return she will give him a child. The desire unexpectedly awakened by this encounter draws them together sever years later, when whithout his knowledge, she is hired as the governess to their daughter.
