La petite vendeuse de soleil / The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun
Zabaltegi

For many years, newspapers have been sold on the streets of Dakar by boys. When Sili, a little 12-year-old girl on crutches decides to go out and sell papers, the boys don't accept her, it's their territory. But Sili is successful: on the first day someone buys all her papers and gives her a big tip. No one believes she earned the money honestly. She is picked up by the police, but eventually they let her go. Sili uses the money she has earned to buy a parasol for her blind grandmother and gives the resto to lepers. The next day, Sili is again harassed by the other newspaper sellers, who are jealous of her success.

BIOGRAPHY

DJIBRIL DIOP MAMBETY

Colobane (Senegal), 1945 - Paris, 1998. He directed two shorts before his first full-length feature film, Touki Bouki (1973), resulting in international acclaim for his original and revolutionary narrative style. It was twenty years before he made his second feature, Hyénes (1992), followed by Le Franc (1994), the first episode of the series Histoires de petites gens, which was left unfinished on the filmmaker's early death.
