Dayereh (The Circle) / THE CIRCLE
Fipresci Grand Prix

The tale of eight jobless women whose lives suddenly cross in a circle of fear and surveillance by a society with absolutely no respect for them. Filmed live in the streets of Teheran, this is a portrait of the profound discrimination suffered by women and of their spirit and courage in trying to escape from the pressure by creating a circle that brings them together and gives them strength.
JAFAR PANAHI One of Iranian cinema's most important recent moviemakers. His first film Badkonake sefid (The White Balloon, 1995) was awarded the Camèra d'Or at Cannes; the second, Ayneh (The Mirror, 1997), won the Golden Leopard at Locarno, and Dayereh (The Circle, 2000) received the Golden Lion at Venice. The Fipresci Grand Prix presented at San Sebastian confirms the impressive career of this director who trained alongside Abbas Kiarostami, but who depicts a personal and unique world.
