Le 17ème Parallèle: Le Vietnam en guerre / THE 17TH PARALLEL: VIETNAM IN WAR
It Happened Yesterday

Situated on the demarcation line between North and South Vietnam, that is, on the 17th Parallel, the movie shows the daily life of the people together with their struggle against the Americans. Constant bombing by B52's obliges the Vietnamese people to live underground by day and to work on the land by night. In only a few weeks more than twenty thousand tons of bombs were dropped on the area.
JORIS IVENS, MARCELINE LORIDAN Joris Ivens (1898-1989) had a solid university education and ample knowledge of filming technique acquired in his father's business, meaning that he was able to dedicate his life to researching destructive or unfair aspects of society via his virtually 50 documentaries of between 1911 and 1988. A teacher of filmmakers and of graphic journalists, in his later years (he worked until the age of 90) some of his works were signed with his wife Marceline Loridan as co-director.
