Each week, a son visits his eccentric father on a beautiful island. The father captivates his son, telling stories about a land called Magonia. Together they build a kite and let their imaginations soar. Through these tales, the boy comes to see the world through his father's eyes, understanding for the first time the older man's passion and fragility. For both of them, Magonia represents unattainable dreams and longings, and the possibility of escaping to a magical place beyond the clouds.
BIOGRAPHY
INEKE SMITS Rotterdam, 1960. After having studied at the National Film and Television School in London, she directed several short fiction films screened at the Rotterdam Festival. Since the mid-nineties, Smits has developed a close working relationship with the writer Arthur Japin. After her short The Cloud Factory (1997) - based, like Magonia, on Japin's short stories - they decided to undertake a more ambitious project, the fruit of which is this, Ineke Smit's first full-length feature film.
