Halfawin, asfur al-sath/Halfaouine, l'enfant des terrasses / Halfaouine: Child of the Terraces
Amongst Friend And Neighbours

12-year-old Noura goes along with his mother to the hammam (public baths) in Halfaouine, a popular district in the old city of Tunis. His budding puberty has him debating between the world of men, of whom he feels a part, and of women, under whose wing he still receives protection while he discovers his sexuality. He's no longer a child, hence he is no longer allowed into the women's baths, but nor is he considered to be an adult, and is therefore left out of ?men's conversation?. Noura feels alone in this difficult passage from infancy to adolescence.
Hammam-Lif (Tunisia), 1944. Studied Literature in France, but his relationship to the film-club movement soon led him into the world of cinema, first as a critic and essayist, and later as a moviemaker. His earliest works barely rippled the surface, but Halfaouine (Halfawin, asfur al-sath/Halfaouine, l'enfant des terrasses, 1990) was an extraordinary success, somehow reproducing it with A Summer in La Goulette (Halk al-Wad/Un été à La Goulette, 1995).
