Omar Gatlato
Amongst Friend And Neighbours

Omar is a youngster from Bab El-Oued, a working-class neighbourhood of Algiers. He himself tells us that there's no room in his house, that his whole family lives in one room, that he's bored with his work as a clerk. With his friends he shares a love of football, the beach, Indian and Egyptian movies, night fiestas in the street... and an obsession with girls. Everything changes the day a friend sells him a little second-hand tape recorder and Omar hears Selma's voice.
BIOGRAPHY
Algiers, 1944. Studied Cinema at the short-lived Institut National de Cinéma de Argel and at the IDHEC in Paris, going on to direct documentaries for the Algerian Administration. His first feature film, Omar Gatlato (1976), immediately highlighted his name as one of the great talents of new Arab cinema, thus marking the start of a rich filmography including works like Rayul wa nawafiz/L'homme qui regardait les fenêtres (1982) or, by then living in France, Bab el-Oued City (1994).
