Steve Martin and Johnny Gambi are a pair of daring oil riggers who are convinced there is "black gold" at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. The wealthy Kermit MacDonald financially supports Martin's construction of a stormproof oil platform. The town of Port Felicity relies on shrimp fishing and the local fishermen are already going through hard times. The disruption caused by the drilling is not going to improve the situation. Tensions come to a breaking point when the two daughters of fisherman Dominique Rigaud -Stella and Francesca- fall for, respectively, Martin and Gambi.
