The Fall of the Roman Empire

Anthony Mann
USA-Spain-Italy
Synopsis
Emperor Marcus Aurelius calls a meeting of his family and supporters at his fortress in Germany. He confides to daughter Lucilla that he intends to make his adopted son, Livius, the new emperor upon his death instead of his legal heir, Commodus. Cleander, a blind soothsayer and one of Commodus's friends, overhears Marcus Aurelius and poisons him. Lucilla tells Livius of Marcus Aurelius's wishes, but he rejects the throne and allows Commodus to become Rome's new Caesar. The empire begins to erode and there is mounting revolt against Commodus's tyrannical ways.
