Synopsis
Director
London, 1950. Vera Drake lives with her husband Stan and two children, Sid and Ethel. Though not rich, they?re happy. Vera is a cleaner; Stan is a mechanic in his brother?s garage; Ethel works in a light-bulb factory and Sid is an apprentice tailor. Vera is always helping people: she regularly visits one sick neighbour and invites another, Reg, to supper because she thinks he isn?t eating properly. Meanwhile, Vera secretly helps young girls to abort, an illegal activity in the England of the time. When one of these girls is rushed to hospital in serious condition, she is questioned by the police, who set out to arrest Vera just as the whole uncomprehending family is celebrating Ethel and Reg?s engagement.
