Melinda and Melinda

Melinda and Melinda combines romantic comedy and drama in a way that Woody Allen, unique among filmmakers, likes to contrast. It takes place in Manhattan and chronicles a pair of crises that give great reign to the funny and serious talents of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Will Ferrell, Jonny Lee Miller, Radha Mitchell, Amanda Peet, Chloë Sevigny and Wallace Shawn. All the usual Allen areas are explained - the fragility of love, marital infidelity, sophisticated romance, the inability to communicate. As a character in the movie puts it, "He's despondent, he's desperate, he's suicidal. All the comic elements are in place."
New York, 1935. He was already writing jokes on an old typewriter and sending them to his local newspapers at the age of 17. Having performed in theatre, in 1965 he appeared for the first time on screen as an actor, in What?s New, Pussycat? (1965), moving to directing four years later with a noir comedy: Take the Money and Run. He has won two Oscars for best Script with Annie Hall (1977) and Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), and has been nominated on another thirteen occasions. He was awarded the Príncipe de Asturias Arts Award in 2002. A writer, filmmaker and musician, his impeccable artistic career more than justifies the homage being paid to him by this year?s San Sebastian International Film Festival.
