El sueño de la maestra / The Schoolteacher’s Dream
Incorrect@s
Luis García Berlanga
Foto: SSIFF

When he shot Bienvenido Mr. Marshall, Berlanga was forbidden to include the village teacher?s dream on arrival of the Americans due to its erotic connotations. Fifty years later, the director has satisfied his frustration, but with a teacher who has nothing in common with the original. Berlanga has made, in his own words, a ?falla? (papier-mâché figures burnt to cinders on 19th March in Valencia) against the death penalty.
BIOGRAPHY
One of the most important creators in Spanish cinema. His biting edge, black humour and certain non-conformist character has given shape to an exemplary list of works starting with neo-realism and maturing over the years into a personal and untransferable style. His long filmography includes Esa pareja feliz (1951), Bienvenido Mister Marshall (Welcome Mr. Marshall, 1953), Los jueves milagro (Miracles of Thursday, 1957), Plácido (1961), El verdugo (Not On Your Life, 1963), Tamaño natural (1973), La escopeta nacional (The National Shotgun, 1978), La vaquilla (The Heifer, 1985), Moros y cristianos (Moors and Christians, 1987), Todos a la cárcel (Everyone Off to Jail, 1993) and París-Tombuctú (Paris-Timbuktu, 1999).
