Cándido, a simple peasant, works unconvinced in a dry plain collectivized by the militiamen who took over the town as soon as the war broke out. Skeptical, his concerns include hunger and his family, especially the imminent arrival in the world of his third child. However, what arrives one morning are the national troops.
