Yakuza Eiga is an astonishing journey into Japan's cinematic underworld from the end of World War II until today, during which time emblematic, key figures of new Japanese cinema like Miike Takashi and Takeshi Kitano have relifted the genre. For a period of four decades, actors and directors met real yakuza, and real yakuza and gang leaders became top actors. This documentary is a cross-border film between cinéma vérité and a historical approach to a popular yet controversial genre, yakuza cinema.
